Cette œuvre comprend deux éléments:

- la mise en service d'une ligne téléphonique dans le lieu d'art New Eldorado;
- la diffusion du numéro de téléphone 514 658-1205 via la communication de l'exposition.

Les visiteurs de l'exposition ainsi que les passants seront libres d'utiliser le téléphone pour faire des appels; tout appel au 514 658-1205 fera sonner le téléphone au lieu d'exposition.

Tant et aussi longtemps qu'il n'y aura ni vandalisme ni problèmes techniques soudains, l'installation permettra des communications vocales en duplex intégral sur le réseau téléphonique public commuté tout au long de l'exposition.

L'intention artistique du présent projet repose moins dans ses aspects techniques relativement banals que dans la contingence radicale des échanges potentiels entre des individus occupant des espaces et des lieux supposés incommensurables. Le potentiel de telles rencontres, qui réside dans le service téléphonique offert dans un lieu sans surveillance, éclaire la relation entre le contexte social et physique du lieu d'exposition et celui supposément virtuel, mais tout aussi complexe, des espaces sociaux des réseaux d'information qui garantissent une visibilité à New Eldorado dans les milieux institutionnels et professionnels.

Par exemple, les utilisateurs du téléphone pourront être conscients ou non que le numéro 514 658-1205 a été diffusé dans les communications entourant une exposition d'art. Toutefois, si la connaissance des possibilités d'appeler New Eldorado au 514 658-1205 sera d'abord limitée aux individus recevant l'information relative à l'exposition via internet, on ne peut en aucun cas prédire comment le numéro sera utilisé et par qui. Alors que l'œuvre met en relief les logiques de différenciation socio-spatiale propres à l'interaction de chacun de ses utilisateurs, l'utilisation de l'appareil téléphonique en tant que tel ne nécessite ou ne dépend d'aucune connaissance du présent contexte.

Ce numéro sera actif du 17 août 2015 à 0h01 au 22 août 2015 à 23h59.

La messagerie texte n'est pas supportée. La messagerie vocale n'est pas supportée: quelqu'un répondra à l'appel ou non. Les appels entrants sont limités à 60 minutes.

This work involves two elements:

-the installation of a working telephone set in the New Eldorado venue;
-the publication of the telephone number 514 658-1205 as part of the information disseminated about the exhibition.

Visitors or passers-by at the exhibition venue are free to use the telephone to place outtgoing calls; calls made to 514 658-1205 will ring the telephone set in the exhibition venue.

In the absence of vandalism or unexpected technical difficulties, the installation will provide standard, full-duplex voice telephony on the Public Switched Telephone Network for the duration of the exhibition.

The artistic intentionality of the work lies less in its relatively banal technical aspects than in the potential for radically contingent, real-time encounters between individuals occupying putatively incommensurate spaces and sites. The potential for such encounters implicit in the provision of telephone service to an unattended location highlights the relationship of the social and physical context of the exhibition site to the supposedly 'virtual', yet nevertheless complexly social spaces of the information networks that underwrite New Eldorado's visibility in professional and institutional circles.

For example, on-site users of the telephone may or may not be aware that the number 514 658-1205 has been disseminated as part of the promotion of an 'art project'. Conversely, while awareness of the potential to call New Eldorado at 514 658-1205 will be initially limited to individuals receiving information about the exhibition via the Internet, there is ultimately no way to predict the ways in which the number will be used, and by whom. While the work thus acts to register the logics of socio-spatial differentiation implicit in a user's engagement with it, use of the on-site telephone does not presume or depend on an awareness of this context.

A telephone set has been installed in the New Eldorado exhibition venue. You may place a call to this telephone by dialing 514 658-1205 using any device capable of voice telephony through the Public Switched Telephone Network. This number will be active from 00:01 am on 2015-08-17 to 11:59 pm on 2015-08-22.

Text messaging is not supported. Voicemail is not supported; either someone will answer the telephone, or they won't. Incoming calls are limited to 60 minutes.

A telephone set has been installed in the New Eldorado exhibition venue. Unless it is out of order, you may use this telephone to place calls to any valid telephone number in Canada or the United States.

The system has been programmed to block calls to numbers outside Canada or the United States, calls to 1-900 numbers and calls to 411 directory assistance. 911 calls are not supported. Outgoing calls are limited to 60 minutes.
